A concrete beauty (6/7/19)

It rained yesterday and this morning, so by this evening Seoul is beautiful. The sky is clear, and you can actually see the clouds and the buildings clearly. The temperature is in the 70's, so it is a perfect time to be a pedestrian today.
We took a guided tour along the 7017 Skywalk. This refurbished walkway was once an overpass for cars built in the 1970s. When it became structurally unsound, the Mayor proposed creating something similar to Paris’ Skywalk. $50,000,000 dollars and 3 years later they have a Skywalk that is pedestrian only and showcases native plants along the walk.

It seems pricey to build, but I don’t know what the costs would have been to demolish the structure. I’m sure it would not have been cheap and given that this city is “Pali, pali” (hurry, hurry in Korean) it is nice to just enjoy walking, talking with friends, and enjoying the skyline. The Skywalk lends itself to wanting to stop and look for fruit on the trees, listen to someone playing the piano (yes, there’s a working piano sitting on the walkway), stick your head through the train windows so a funny memory is recorded or just let nature mellow the days cares for a bit.

We were fortunate that our tour started in the late evening because after seeing the sun set we were wowed with a Skywalk that was lit with LED colored lights. They changed colors slowly but gave the bridge a different vibe. Seoul has done a great job creating pockets of peace in a city that is in constant motion.
